General Regulations
University Regulations
- Admission to Alfred University is a privilege and not
a right. Once admitted, students can expect to continue attendance at the
University so long as they (1) maintain satisfactory academic records, (2)
meet their financial obligation to the University, and (3) do not seriously
or persistently violate existing University regulations. Separation from the
University will be made only after a review of the matter by an appropriate
group, and according to established University procedures.
- The University reserves the right to cancel any course
if registration for it does not justify continuance.
- The University reserves the right at any time to make
changes deemed advisable in the rules and regulations and in the tuition and
fees.
- Campus parking is restricted and student motor vehicles
must be registered with the Safety Office at the time of registration for
classes or as soon as the vehicle is brought to Alfred. Registration is for
the academic year or remaining portion thereof.
- To park on campus, commuters from outside the village
and students living in University residence halls must pay a fee of $45 per
year. It is the obligation of students to acquaint themselves with the regulations,
fee schedule and fine schedule available in the office of the Director of
Safety.
- The New York State Penal Law (265.06) provides for criminal
penalties for unauthorized possession of weapons on college campuses. See
Alfred
University's Weapon Policy.
Graduate Regulations
- Performance and accomplishment in graduate courses (except
Art) are reported by the instructor using the letters A, B+, B, C, and F,
which have their traditional interpretations. In Art, the grades HP (high
pass), P (pass), NC (no credit), or NR (no report) are used, and grade point
averages (GPA) are not computed. However, see item 5, below.
- Students aspiring to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy,
Doctor of Psychology, or Master of Arts in School Psychology are permitted
to present no more than six credit hours at the grade of C.
- If a student takes the same course twice, the more recent
grade earned is used in all GPA and hours calculation, and the lower is ignored.
However, the original grade remains on the transcript.
- Thesis and project credits are reported using the letters
P (pass) or NC (no credit). In addition, the instructor may choose to assign
NR (no report), indicating that the grade will be given in the future.
- The Graduate School reserves the right to deny further
registration to any student who is not making satisfactory progress. Each
student is expected to earn a GPA of 3.00 or better each semester, and, cumulatively.
Scholastic Standards committees review each student's record each semester
and take appropriate action, which may include the termination of graduate
study for students who do not meet the GPA standard or who do not make satisfactory
progress in other ways.
- Any student who fails a qualifying or comprehensive
examination for the second time is automatically dropped from the Graduate
School for academic failure.
- Graduate students at Alfred University are expected
to maintain generally accepted standards of academic honesty and professional
integrity. Failure to do so will lead to dismissal from the Graduate School.
Any student so dismissed may request reconsideration of the matter by the
Graduate Council, such request to be made within five days of the notice of
dismissal. If not satisfied with that reconsideration, the student may appeal
to the Provost.
- All work done in satisfaction of the requirements for
an Alfred University master's degree must be completed within a period of
six consecutive calendar years.
- Written applications for the conferring of advanced
degrees must be made by students to the Director of Graduate Studies two months
before the commencement in which they expect to receive the degrees. This
requirement may be satisfied by means of a form filled out at the time of
the student's final registration.
- Graduation from the school and the awarding of any degree
depends upon the satisfactory completion of the course of study prescribed
by the degree program elected. The University reserves the right to withhold
the diploma for poor scholarship or for other reasons.
Those courses with numbers 500 or greater are offered for
graduate students and for graduate credit. Seniors in good academic standing
may be permitted to enroll in them with the express permission of the instructors.
Seniors who are already admitted to the Alfred University Graduate School may,
with permission of the Director of Graduate Studies, take certain courses for
graduate credit during the last semester of their undergraduate programs.
Courses numbered 400 to 499 are advanced level courses, some
of which have been approved to carry graduate credit, and are designated on
the record with the letter 'G' appended to the number. Syllabi for these 400G
courses are available in departmental offices. Please note that inclusion of
400G courses is restricted in different ways in the various graduate programs.
500 and 600 level courses are offered each year unless marked
with an asterisk, in which case they are offered in alternate years, or on sufficient
demand.
