| Parking and Transportation
Do you need to have a car at AU?
Alfred may not be a major transportation
hub, but you CAN survive without a car. Everything in the village
of Alfred is within walking distance (see
what services are available). Public (bus) transportation is available
for trips to Walmart or supermarkets 15 miles away. If you’ve
got to shop at a mall, AU offers Venture Van trips to malls, metropolitan
areas, and other destinations on a regular basis. The 40-passenger
coach buses make 4-5 trips per semester and costs $5.00 per student
per trip.
Students in need of transportation to medically-related
appointments can contact the Health Center at 607.871.2400 for assistance.
How about getting to and from campus during
vacations and semester breaks? The University operates an airport
shuttle to and from the Rochester and Buffalo Airports to coincide
with vacations and semester breaks. You can also share a ride with
a fellow student using AU's web-based "Ride Board". Again,
there is a busy schedule of buses to and from the Village of Alfred,
and cars for hire when needed. For detailed information, see Getting
to and from AU
What about parking? As on many campuses, student parking is
at a premium at AU. There are parking lots and spaces on campus
streets for student-only parking, but finding a space near your
residence hall or classroom can be a challenge. In addition, AU
is a hilly campus, so walking the relatively long distances from
parking lots to campus destinations can be particularly ‘invigorating’…especially
in winter! Is there a parking fee?
If you plan to park your car in campus parking
lots, you must purchase a parking permit from the Campus Security
Office (607.871.2108). Fees are $55.00 per vehicle permit for 2006-2007.
Vehicle registration can take place during orientation or at any
time during the semester.
