How to Use Teams for CAS Services

The Center for Academic Success (CAS) will primarily be using Microsoft Teams to provide peer tutoring, Writing Center, academic consultation, and disability services for the Spring 2021 semester. Guides for using Teams for various CAS services are outlined below.

How to download Microsoft Teams:

  1. Make a writing center appointment on TutorTrac as you normally would.
  2. Download Microsoft Teams (available through your AU 365 account) if you have not already. Instructions for downloading Teams can be found in the links above.
    • If difficulties arise with meeting via MS Teams please know that your tutor is available to meet with you on other platforms that may work better for you such as Skype or FaceTime but we ask that you try Teams first. If you cannot use Teams provide your preferred contact information in the 'note' section when scheduling your appointment on TutorTrac.
    • When choosing a platform, keep in mind that meetings tend to be more effective if you can have a conversation and see the same materials in real time.
  1. After you sign up for your appointment on TutorTrac, your tutor will send you an invite to a Teams meeting for that day and time. You will get an email notification asking you to accept the meeting as well as a notification on Teams letting you know the same information.
  2. At the time of the meeting your tutor will start the meeting and, even if you have the Teams application completely closed, you will get a notification that they started the meeting. You can then join the meeting through that notification or open the application and join through the ‘Calendar’ tab on the left-hand side of the window. Click ‘Join’ where your appointment is and you will join the meeting.
  3. Your tutor will prompt you to attach your document and assignment prompt in the chat by clicking the paperclip icon below your chat bar. They will now have access to your document and you can both edit it together.Teams home page with tab for the Calendar feature selected on left hand menuIf you have questions about the Writing Center please contact Vicky Westacott.
  1. Download Microsoft Teams (available through your AU 365 account) if you have not already. Instructions for downloading Teams can be found in the links above.
  2. You can gain access to the Team using the link provided in the next section labeled 'Courses covered by peer tutoring & Team's access codes'.
  3. Simply click on the link and you will have access to the team that corresponds with your selected course!

How Virtual Tutoring Works

  • Tutoring Teams are set up for both specific course sections, i.e., Supplemental Instruction, AND general subject matters, i.e., Drop-in Peer Tutoring.
  • Feel free to post any questions or start discussions with your peers.
  • Tutors will NOT be available at all times. You may post a question at any time but it will not get an immediate answer until the tutor's designated work hours. Each tutor will have their work hours posted in their status which can be found by hovering over their picture. In addition, if they are available for tutoring they will have a green circle with a checkmark by their photo and a red circle if they are unavailable.

If you have any questions about peer tutoring, please contact Chris Gause.
