Fred Gertz Center for Academic Success

The mission of the Center for Academic Success (CAS) is to support all Alfred University students in becoming engaged with and empowered by the learning process. Through academic consultation, tutoring and the provision of other resources and accommodations, our staff assists students in developing the mindset and skills that they need to be successful learners - in college and throughout their lives.

COVID-19 CAS Service Updates

The Center for Academic Success (CAS) will be using Microsoft Teams to provide academic support and disability services for the remainder to the semester. Changes, updates, and access procedures for various services are outlined below.

How to download Microsoft Teams:

Developing learning skills is very important to being an effective college student, especially in an online learning environment. You don’t have to figure it out on your own! CAS has created a Canvas course available to all Alfred University students that has strategies, tips, tricks, and resources regarding how to be an effective, self-directed learner. The Canvas course will be updated periodically so check in regularly.

Any course that was previously supported by CAS via Supplemental Instruction (SI) or Drop-in Tutoring/Learning Labs will continue to have a peer tutor to assist students enrolled in the course. However, peer tutoring will now take place remotely using Microsoft Teams. Students enrolled in courses supported by CAS tutoring services will receive a unique Microsoft Teams access code from their tutor, instructor, or on the course’s Canvas page.

How Virtual Tutoring Works

  • Tutoring Teams are set up for both specific course sections (reflecting previous Supplemental Instruction sections) AND general subject matters (reflecting previous drop-in tutoring sessions). If you are part of a general subject Team you will find channels within the Team that correspond to the courses covered.
  • Once in the Team and channel you need, feel free to post any questions or start discussions with your peers.
  • Tutors will NOT be available at all times. You may post a question at any time but it will not get an immediate answer until the tutor is sitting their work hours. Each tutor will have their work hours posted in their status which can be found by hovering over their picture. In addition, if they are available for tutoring they will have a green circle with a checkmark by their photo and a red circle if they are unavailable.

Students can schedule one-on-one Writing Center appointments using the online scheduling platform, TutorTrac, or calling CAS (607-871-2148) Monday-Friday from 8:30am-4:30pm. Writing Center appointments will take place virtually using Microsoft Teams. The tutor will contact you using the Chat function on Microsoft Teams at the time of your scheduled appointment. Please have the assignment you would like assistance with and your questions ready prior to your appointment.

If you have questions about the Writing Center please contact Vicky Westacott.

Any Alfred University student can get one-on-one assistance with developing the following skills: time-management, study strategies, organization, self-advocacy, note-taking, reading comprehension, etc.

To schedule a virtual appointment with one of our Academic Consultants call CAS (607-871-2148) Monday-Friday from 8:30am-4:30pm or email cas@alfred.edu. When you make your appointment, please specify what you would like assistance with and how you would like your academic consultant to contact you (Microsoft Teams, phone, etc.). When choosing a platform, keep in mind that meetings tend to be more effective if you can have a conversation and see the same materials in real time.

Students already receiving academic accommodations at AU

If you were previously approved for academic accommodation through CAS, your academic consultant should have emailed you to set up a virtual meeting to discuss how/if your academic accommodation needs may change based on course structure changes in response to COVID-19.

If you have not received an email from your academic consultant or you need to schedule another meeting, call CAS (607-871-2148) Monday-Friday between 8:30am-4:30pm or email cas@alfred.edu. When you make your appointment, please specify what you would like assistance with and how you would like your academic consultant to contact you (Microsoft Teams, phone, etc.). When choosing a platform, keep in mind that meetings tend to be more effective if you can have a conversation and see the same materials in real time.
