Marlene Marengue I am a sophomore majoring in Chemistry. I like to create my own beauty products, bake and cook. Basically, I like to mix things up and I am a curious person. Therefore, this major is the perfect fit for me because it allows me to explore. I hope that one day I will discover something that helps people. When I came to AU I found a welcoming community. Now, one of my goals is to give back by being a passionate student and helping others. For this reason, I am the senate representative of the International Students Association, a member of the UNICEF club and a tutor. As a tutor, I will help you to understand that chemistry is not as difficult as it seems and you have enough skills to succeed. Thank you. |

Maksym Smirnov Hi! I am majoring in Finance, Accounting, and Mathematics. It took me two semesters after I came to Alfred as a Business Analytics major to understand that my real passion was in Finance. Along the way, I have picked up two additional majors to broaden my perspective of Finance as a whole. As I went through an internship with a small hedge fund in Rochester, I figured out that the part of Finance that is the most interesting to me is Equity Research which is the research of public companies and their stocks. While attending AU, I have been a Vice-President of the Student Senate and a president of the Economics Club. In my spare time, I like playing soccer and reading. Currently my favorite book is Nausea by Jean-Paul Sartre. As a tutor, I look forward to helping students explore the world of business and finance while discovering their own passions. |

Be an Embedded Tutor
What is an Embedded Tutor?
A trained peer tutor who actively attends a course alongside their peers to facilitate support for a specific class and professor. Embedded tutors provide individualized support during class activities to motivate and encourage student engagement in the classroom. Tutoring for the course is provided outside of class during the free drop-in tutoring hours (Sunday - Thursday 4:00 - 8:00 p.m.)
Embedded Tutors are selected in collaboration with faculty and are trained by CAS at the beginning of the fall/spring semesters. The embedded tutor works with the instructor as they provide guidance on how to support students with understanding and applying concepts while strengthening academic engagement in and outside of class.
Tutor Qualifications
A potential tutor has a collaborative and warm presence, effective communication skills, current knowledge of the subject/course, has received no less than a B in the course they will be a tutor for, and has an understanding of their responsibilities in supporting academic engagement. These qualifications include:
- At least a sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student
- Must have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
- Must have developed and effective verbal and written communication skills
- Must have strong interpersonal skills with the ability and desire to work with a variety of learners
If interested in becoming a tutor, please reach out to the Assistant Director for the Center for Academic Success. A position description and application will be posted on Handshake around midsemester to gather a pool of candidates for the following academic semester.
Drop-In Tutoring Hours
CAS offers one on one and/or small group tutoring for Alfred University students enrolled in many challenging AU undergraduate courses. Tutors meet in person during drop-in tutoring hours which are held on the bottom level of Scholes Library. Drop-in tutoring hours are offered Sunday – Thursday 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.
- If you need assistance with a class that is not supported by one of the tutoring disciplines, please take advantage of the following resources:
- Your instructor's office hours (you can also email your instructor to set up a meeting)
- Academic Consultation at CAS: set up a meeting with one of our consultants to discuss how to study more effectively, manage your time and tasks more efficiently, reduce test-anxiety, etc.
- Study with Friends: Research shows students who study with others retain more information than studying alone.
